Summer Steelhead Broodstock, Acclimation and Monitoring (BAM) Program

The BAM program is the summer steelhead hatchery monitoring and evaluation program for the Okanogan Basin. The overall intent of the program is to increase the number of naturally spawning and naturally produced adult steelhead in the Okanogan Basin. The Colville Tribes provides adult steelhead from the Okanogan Basin by means of adult traps, weirs, plus hook and line efforts. These adults are used as parents to 100,000 juvenile steelhead raised at Well’s Hatchery by WDFW. They are released into the Okanogan River Basin the following year. The release of these fish satisfies the No Net Impact (NNI) steelhead mitigation in the Priest Rapids Salmon and Steelhead Settlement Agreement to address unavoidable losses of steelhead associated with the operation of Wanapum and Priest Rapid dams. Grant County PUD provides the funding for BAM and the Colville Tribes lead the effort using data collected as part of the monitoring program by evaluating adult returns, survival, and their effect on natural production in the wild. To date, because of the introduction of Okanogan stock steelhead in Omak Creek, we have exceeded adult target goals for Omak Creek and are in the process of seeding additional key habitats throughout the Okanogan River Basin.
